RLC Technology Policy

Dear RLC Parents,

This form is intended to notify Reach Learning Community parents and children of our Technology Policy as relates to Cell Phones, Tablets, Earbuds & Airpods, Smartwatches, and Computers during Learning Days, Extracurricular Classes, Aftercare and Thursday Classes.

The RLC 25/26 Handbook states:

“Students can bring devices from home to be used for peer discussion or RLC classes (research, project preparation, etc.). These devices may only be used under adult supervision.
Students may not use devices recreationally during lunch, recess, or after-care or any other time during the RLC day and during dismissal time.”

We have communicated to the students that if they need to contact their parent they can ask a teacher and with permission, contact their parent in the presence of the teacher. We have students who abide by these guidelines but we have many who do not.

We are having increasing incidence of students disregarding this policy although widely communicated and enforced. Therefore we are communicating directly with parents and students again and enforcing a ZERO TOLERANCE - NO CELL PHONES, TABLETS, EARBUDS & AIRPODS, SMARTWATCHES, AND COMPUTERS POLICY. This policy updates and supersedes any previously communicated in the 25/26 RLC Parent Handbook as stated above.

The aim of Reach Learning Community is to maintain an environment where students are safe while learning and engaging with those who are present in the room with them, whether in peer discussion, lunch, chapel, aftercare, lessons or classes. By choosing to participate in our program your student is choosing to engage in the learning environment around them.

We are asking for parent support in multiple ways:

  1. Agree by submitting this form electronically to let us know that you have read and understand this policy.

  2. If you need to communicate with your child during RLC hours please call the office (985-778-2065), contact your child’s group leader, or our administrator - Rachel Alvarez (504-493-9255) or our director - Abby Conner (504-644-8264).

  3. Please refrain from texting or calling your child during their time here at RLC. It is increasingly difficult to enforce this policy without parent participation.

What will happen when this policy is violated:

  1. There will be no warning. Devices will be confiscated immediately, brought to the RLC Admin office, placed in a marked envelope with the child’s name on it, and placed in the technology holding bin until they leave at the end of the day.

  2. It is the child’s responsibility to gain permission to go to the admin office to retrieve their device at the end of the day from the administrative team. RLC Admin office hours are 8am-4pm Tuesday-Friday.

  3. Parents will be notified immediately by phone if their child’s device has been confiscated.

  4. If your child refuses to surrender their device:

    1. Your child will be removed from their group to either the foyer or the admin office.

    2. Parents will be called immediately to come and pick up your child for the remainder of the day. There will be no refunds for missed lessons, classes or programs.

Thank you, as always, for allowing us to come along side you and your family on your homeschooling journey.

Kindest Regards,
The RLC Team
